Helping girls in Pakistan learn their ABC’s and 123’s.

Who we are

Developments in Literacy (DIL), is a not-for-profit global agency that is dedicated to providing education to disadvantaged children – especially girls - by establishing and operating primary and secondary level schools in Pakistan.

At DIL, we wanted to make a real difference. So, we sought out where we could make the biggest impact. We found it in girls. We found that by investing in the future of girls, we could change the future of an entire community – and even the world.

DIL Canada is a registered charity with the Canada Revenue Agency

DIL Canada for Literacy We work diligently to promote awareness and raise money for DIL schools through activities and community-events.

The problem of illiteracyIn Pakistan, illiteracy is a problem of great urgency. Illiteracy rates among girls remain at 70 percent. The situation is especially alarming for girls who live in rural areas. These girls grow up illiterate, susceptible to early marriage, and unable to break the vicious cycle of poverty.

What we believe We believe that every girl-child in Pakistan, no matter how poor or how underprivileged, should have access to a quality education. All young girls should be given the opportunity to learn, to reach their full potential, and contribute towards the vitality of their families and communities.

How education helpsGirls living in poverty are uniquely capable of creating a better future for themselves, and their families if given the chance. With access to education a girl’s life and the life of her family can change for the better.

With an education a girl understand the importance of literacy and will educate her own children, she raises healthy children, and has the opportunity to improve the standard of living for herself, her family, her community, and her country.

Without education none of these things happen. She is illiterate, married off and isolated. She and her family are trapped in a cycle of poverty.

DIL Schools DIL has worked diligently to establish, adopt, and maintain 179 primary and secondary schools in partnership with non-governmental organizations(NGOs) in all four provinces in Pakistan.

DIL Canada proudly operates 6 community schools.
