DIL Gala took place at one of the finest restaurant's in Toronto, Old Mills Inn on Nov. 19th, 2006 in a very intimate setting. It was truly a night of exquisite dining and the night was enriched with a live performance by the renowned bhangra sensation, Josh. This fundraiser dinner was held to benefit the underprivilieged students of DIL Canada Schools in rural Pakistan.
Developments in Literacy (DIL), a non-profit organization, was launched in February 1997 in Southern California with the purpose of eradicating illiteracy in the remote and neglected areas of Pakistan by establishing primary and secondary level schools for underprivileged children, primarily girls. DIL firmly believes that education is a critical requisite for empowering individuals with appropriate skills to reduce poverty and achieve sustainable development. Today DIL operates out of Canada, United States, Singapore and Pakistan. It currently has offices in Toronto, Los Angeles and Islamabad and chapter-boards in Toronto, Ottawa, New York, San Francisco, Washington, Houston, San Diego and Singapore.
The event started with the introduction about DIL Canada and the purpose of its organization which was followed by a three course steak and chicken dinner followed by chocolate mousse cake for dessert. After the dinner, there were speeches by the board members and Mr. Ghalib Iqbal, the Consulate General of Pakistan in Canada.
This was followed by a short twenty minute break where DesiVibe got the opportunity to go to Josh's room to have a little chat with them about what they had been upto and they talked about their wonderful experience performing in Pakistan and how they wish they could do more shows in Pakistan.
After the break, Josh made their way down to the hall and as always gave a very energetic performance, getting the crowd involved by making everyone dance including uncles and aunties. They performed all of their major hits such as Josh Naal Pao Bhangra, Baan Farh Kay, Kabhi, nicely done remake of the classic Khaaike Paan Banaras Wala, Sukhbir's song Ishq. The also performed two songs from their upcoming album, titled Mausam, which is set to release next week in Canada. The songs performed were Mausam and Mahi Ve. The video for Mahi Ve can be seen on www.DesiVibe.TV.
Overall, the event was very well organized and was very successful in raising funds for the DIL Foundation. After the show, DesiVibe got an exclusive opportunity to interview Josh where they talked about their latest album and their collabarations with Rishi Rich and Nelly Furtado, so don't forget to catch the interview on www.DesiVibe.TV and for pictures visit our picture gallery.
